The Central Railroad of New Jersey was built to carry anthracite coal from Scranton, PA. To New York City's coal yards and ports. It also hosted extensive commuter operations, and heavy freight traffic off of the Baltimore and Ohio, and Reading railroads.
Volume I of "Vignettes of the Jersey Central" covers the years 1948 to 1965, and features steam and diesel power of that era. Beginning near Jersey City, locations visited include High Bridge, Green Pond, Easton, Bethlehem, Allentown, Mauch Chunk, Glen Onoko, Ashley, Wilkes-Barre and more. Featured motive power ranges from Camelback switchers to SD-35's and includes Pacifics, Babyfaces, Trainmasters, RS's, Geeps and F's. As a bonus, steam and diesel locomotives of the Lehigh and Hudson River Railroad make cameo appearances.
Veteran photographers Claude Goebel, Charles Houser, Sr., Bruce Kantner, and William P. Price have provided us with this exciting look back at one of the most colorful "Anthracite Roads", in Volume I of Vignettes of the Jersey Central Lines.
